The success story of Vipp began in 1931 in Denmark. In this year, the then seventeen year old Holger Nielsen won a car in a lottery at the public football stadium. But unfortunately he could not do anything with the new vehicle because he did not have a driving licence. Holger Nielsen sold the car and with the sale got himself a metal lathe which formed the basis for his subsequent metal goods factory Vipp.
In 1939 Holger Nielsen married the trained hairdresser Marie Axelsen. His wife wanted to open her own salon and since they did not have much money for it, she asked her husband if he could help her with the furnishings. Above all, a practical dustbin was important and perhaps Holger could make one? Holger Nielsen went to work at once and presented his wife shortly thereafter with the Vipp pedal bin. Marie was enthusiastic and some medical and dental assistants, who were among her customers wanted to use this brilliant trash can in their husbands’ practices.
Holger Nielsen then got many orders for the practical pedal bin, which he had originally developed just for his wife. The Vipp pedal bin quickly became a fixture of many practices in Denmark. Today the Vipp pedal bin is famous the world over and a gladly seen accessory in the bathroom or kitchen.
The motto of Holger Nielsen, "good design is never out of fashion!", is still valid even today. The Vipp trash can has changed very little since its inception and is still a company best seller. The Vipp pedal bin is an international design classic and is also shown in the architecture and design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Meanwhile Vipp manufactures various kitchen and bathroom furniture items and related accessories. The chief designer of Vipp is Morten Bo Jensen.
