Ernesto Gismondi was born in San Remo, Italy, in 1931. He studied aeronautical engineering and rocket propulsion systems in Milan and Rom.
In 1959 Ernesto Gismondi together with Sergio Mazza were the founders of Artemide, a famous company for lighting products.
From 1964 to 1984 Gismondi was a professor at the university in Milan. In 1981 together with Ettore Sottsass he founded the legendary Memphis Group.
Working as a designer for Artemide Ernesto Gismondi created the classic floor lamp "Zen" (black finished metal base, lampshade in anodized aluminum), the pendant hanging light fixture "Macumba" (with vertically adjustable shade), as well as the models "Aton", "Mitasi", "Sintesi" and "Tebe".
