The charming Kay Bojesen Wooden Figurine zebra was created by Danish designer Kay Bojesen for his company Kay Bojesen Denmark.
Bojesen is famous for the rounded, simple wooden toys that he designed to stimulate children's imagination.Kay Bojesen Denmark, in collaboration with the Rosendahl Design Group, has reintroduced many of the traditional carved wooden animals that he created. The first animal that he made in 1930 was a wooden horse, followed by a wooden dachshund and, in 1935, the Kay Bojesen Wooden Figurine zebra.
The stylised black and white zebra is carved from wood and is hand painted with black and white stripes. It has a black tail, an erect mane that is edged in black and it stands alertly with all four legs splayed. The eyes are not painted but hollowed out of the wood. This whimsical figurine appeals to both adults and children and makes a wonderful ornament, either on its own or in a grouping. This design classic makes a great gift for children that can be passed down through generations, and it would also add a unique twist to a Nativity manger at Christmas.
