The Akari D Suspension Lamp has been created by Isamu Noguchi for the brand Vitra. The name Akari is Japanese for brightness and light. The lamp embodies both of these properties because of the material it is made of. It is handcrafted and its shape is inspired by nature. It is specifically based on the shape of the moon and the sun in accordance with the Japanese ideograph.
The Akari D Suspension Lamp has a spherical shade. It is made of Shoji paper that is sourced from the inner bark of mulberry trees. The frame is made of bamboo ribbing that is stretched over wooden moulds to give it a round shape. The Shoji paper is then cut into strips and glued onto the frame. When it dries completely, the mould is removed and a perfectly shaped shade is achieved. Each lamp has a sun and moon logo in tribute to the elements that inspired it. The symbol also verifies each product's authenticity.
The Akari D Suspension Lamp has a diameter of 75cm and a height of 69cm. Its cable is 220 cm long. The lamp is not dimmable. It comes in light-toned neutral colours. For the sake of safety, it is advised that the lamp is kept away from flames such as from a candle or fireplace which can damage the delicate paper it is made of. It works with an E27 socket.
