The stylish Akari YP1 Suspension Lamp was designed by Isamu Noguchi for Vitra.
Vitra is a German producer of design-led items for the home. Operating for more than 70 years, they collaborate with inspiration creators including Isamu Noguchi, a Japanese American artists and designer. Noguchi draws on Japanese crafts and traditional values for his designs.
The lights and lamps in the Akari range are all carefully crafted by hand in a family-run workshop in Japan. Every item is considered a light sculpture that can be appreciated either switched on or turned off. The paper shades are constructed from washi, a traditional handmade paper. This paper has been made in Japan for more than 1000 years using local plants and shrubs - the Akari products use the bark of the mulberry tree. The Akari YP1 Suspension Lamp hangs gracefully from the ceiling on a coated steel wire. Designed to turn the harshness of an electric lightbulb into a warm glow reminiscent of the sun, the Akari YP1 Suspension Lamp lends itself to a cosy living room or bedroom. With a generous 50cm width and 38cm height, this ceiling light brings an artistic impact to a space.
