The Eames Fiberglass Armchair DAR Black Base was designed by Charles and Ray Eames for the brand Vitra.
The collaboration of the Eames design duo with Vitra in the mid-20th century contributed to the Swiss label's early success. Today, it maintains this success by reworking furniture design classics as well as promoting the work of contemporary designers. The art and architectural backgrounds of Charles and Ray Eames informed and influenced their furniture design. Their hugely successful work is showcased around the world in places such as New York's MoMA.
The Eames Fiberglass Armchair DAR Black Base pleasingly contrasts the organically flowing lines of the fibreglass shell seat with the architectural structure of the steel-wire Eiffel Tower base. Fibreglass is easy to mould and mass-produce, yet has a pleasing appearance and tactile texture that resembles a natural material. The moulded seat shell conforms comfortably to the body and is available in a choice of colours while the base is finished in black. The Eames Fiberglass Armchair DAR Black Base is emblematic of 1950's design yet still works in contemporary settings, both public and domestic. Its overall dimensions are 83 x 62.5 x 60 cm.
